Fostering Hearts and Minds: A K3 Teacher’s Journey of Compassion and Connection

With 21 years of teaching experience, nine of them at Trinity Episcopal School, our dedicated K3 teacher brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and a deep sense of purpose to the classroom. This year, she embarks on another exciting journey with her students, instilling values and fostering a love for learning.

One of her favorite school traditions is Organized Mass Chaos (OMC) day, a highly anticipated end-of-year event that brings out the competitive spirit in every class. OMC day is filled with energetic, fun activities where students face off in various challenges, creating an exciting atmosphere of teamwork, laughter, and friendly competition. She loves how the day fosters a sense of camaraderie among the students, as they cheer on their classmates and work together to achieve a common goal. For her, OMC day embodies the joy and community spirit that makes Trinity special.

Another highlight of the year for her is Outdoor Ed, an annual trip with students that offers a unique opportunity to connect with students outside of the classroom. She treasures this experience because it provides a more informal and relaxed setting, allowing her to witness students’ growth in different ways.  Outdoor Ed is a time when students can develop leadership skills, build lasting friendships, and engage with the world beyond school walls.

What truly inspires her as an educator are two guiding philosophies: Conscious Discipline and Capturing Kids’ Hearts. These programs have shaped her teaching style and her belief in the importance of building compassionate, respectful relationships within the classroom.  She is passionate about creating a classroom where students feel seen and heard, and where they learn to treat one another with dignity. For her, this is what makes teaching so fulfilling—watching her students grow not just academically, but emotionally and socially.

Her dedication to these philosophies is rooted in a lesson she learned from her own fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Harper, who taught her the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” This simple, yet profound principle guides her in every aspect of her teaching, and she strives to pass it on to her students, fostering a culture of kindness and empathy in her classroom.

When asked what it means to be a Patriot, she reflects, “It’s about standing up for what’s right, even when it takes courage.” She aims to instill this same sense of integrity in her students, guiding them to be thoughtful and kind individuals who lead with compassion.

Outside of school, she enjoys the quiet beauty of country life, where she spends time with her livestock and tends to her roses. And when she’s not outdoors, you can often find her lost in the pages of a good fiction book—one of her favorite pastimes.
